Discovery Park, an education and entertainment retreat with a riparian habitat, is focused on the science and culture of the Gila Valley, from mining and agriculture to space exploration. We will see the research-grade 20” Cassegrain reflector telescope and dome for the Gov Aker Observatory and the radio telescope donated by the Vatican Observatory. A full-motion simulator takes guests on a ride past Mt. Graham to tour the solar system. Discovery Park is a high-water mark in Arizona, with environmental, technological, and educational features that are unique to the region.
Mt Graham International Observatory
Astronomers here are among the national and international leaders in observational and theoretical research in astronomy. At the same time, they are making breakthroughs in related technology development — from new light detectors to giant telescope mirrors — that promise to be a catalyst for a renaissance in optical and infrared astronomy. Scientists working here also have key roles in major space astronomy missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility.

Freeport-McMoRan Safford Operations (8500 North Freeport-McMoRan Road, Safford)
The Safford mine is one of the most environmentally advanced copper mines ever built and one of the newest copper mines in North America. The operations currently employ approximately 700 and have produced over one billion pounds of cathode copper since mining commenced in 2007.
