Local First Arizona, the Arizona Rural Development Council, and the Arizona SciTech Festival are presenting Science Happens Here to help advance STEM education in rural Arizona. The program officially launched in Safford, Arizona, last month. Our hope is that parents will encourage their children to explore science and have fun learning and conducting experiments at home. This is a safe and economical way to teach kids about the Science that surrounds them every day.
Science Happens Here mixes collecting trading cards, local businesses, and STEM education together to get children grades 3rd to 8th excited to learn. The trading cards are designed to engage kids to better understand the science that surrounds them. Kids collect the cards at local businesses (no purchase necessary), visit the website, and gain access to the science experiments.
Collect all 13 cards and see the experiments on the website here: sciencehappenshereaz.com.
You’ll need to get the card to enter the access code to get credit for doing the experiments and entered to win prizes. Trading cards can be collected from these 13 local businesses in the rural communities of Safford and Pima:
- Genevieve’s Market
- A Step Back in Time
- Trophies N Tees
- Smith & Taylor Automotive Inc.
- Curtis Landscaping & Irrigation
- Priority One Salon
- Crossfit Nemesis
- Candy’s Ice Cream Co.
- Graham County Co-op
- Richard’s Music Co.
- CMI Quick Copy
- Gingerbread Co.
For examples of the experiments: the bakery has the science of gluten, the auto mechanic has the science of oils, the clothing store has the science of dyes, and more. There are 13 cards to collect like a scavenger hunt, and there are fun prizes for the kids who conduct the most science experiments! All experiments can be completed using house-hold items.
Collect the cards from these local business and get to learning! See more information on Science Happens Here online.
